Succinic anhydride can react with ethanol to form diethyl succinate. The reaction involves the nucleophilic attack of the ethanol molecule on the electrophilic carbon of the succinic anhydride, leading to the formation of an intermediate. This intermediate then undergoes a rearrangement to form diethyl succinate, along with the release of a molecule of acetic acid. This reaction is an example of an esterification reaction, where an alcohol and a carboxylic acid derivative combine to form an ester. **
